Why is my speed so slow?
The connection speed that is reported by your modem is the initial connection speed. After connecting, adjustments and changes to the speed will occur. The modem may attempt to speed up (fall forward), but will slow down (fall back) when excessive transmission errors occur that prevent the modem from sustaining the initial speed. When a modem tries to achieve/maintain speeds that are beyond the line's actual capability, you end up with a lot of errors and speed shifts which can result in poor performance.

Things which can affect the line quality and low modem speeds are usually attributed to the telephone line itself or a faulty modem that may need to be replaced. Make sure that your computer has all of the latest patches, service packs, and drivers (modem driver especially) installed on it. Also, you should make sure that the phone cord that is plugged into your computer as well as the wall jack is in good shape; free of cuts, abrasions, and obvious defects. Sometimes adding an addition telephone, answering machine, or telephone line surge protector can cause the phone line quality to diminish. If you have recently added anything to the telephone system in your residence, try to unplug it and see if you receive the same results. Lastly are factors which your telephone company would have to take a look at, sometimes after it rains or there is high humidity, moisture can cause interference in telephone equipment and telephone line. If the problem persists you should contact your phone company and have them test the line.
